About Saplunara
Saplunara is a rare place where one can escape to a sandy haven surrounded by untouched nature. Saplunara is located on the southeastern tip of the island Mljet. It is a bay about one kilometer long, enclosed by a thick forest of pine. The sea in the shallows of Saplunara Bay can reach up to 28 °C in summer. It has two beautiful sandy beaches called Big Saplunara and Small Saplunara. In the picture below are some children building sand castles on the Big Saplunara. Our apartments are located a two-minute walk from Big Saplunara and only a few steps away from Small Saplunara.
Big Saplunara
Small Saplunara The name Saplunara comes from the Latin word sabalum meaning tiny sand. Legend has it that the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked in Saplunara on his way to Rome in 61 A.D. and spent several months preaching the Gospel. It is quite possible that he was the one to have named this wondrous place. Many recreational activities are available especially for nature enthusiasts. We offer a boat for rent, as well as fishing excursion possibilities. The National Park Mljet is located about an hour drive away from Saplunara. Please see About Mljet for more information on NP Mljet.
Saplunara is a protected landscape by the Republic of Croatia Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Croatia.
